Two officials from the environmental sector were arrested for wrongfully issuing import licenses in Vietnam.

Former deputy director of provincial Natural Resources and Environment Department Doan Van Phuc and Truong Van Em, the head of Ben Tre Environmental Protection Sub-department, were arrested on an abuse of position and power charges, vietnamnet reported.

According to reports, Ben Tre’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment provided the Hong Viet Company with a certificate of eligibility for the import of waste materials on January 12, 2015.

However, the company did not have any regulated factory, equipment or production lines to handle the waste materials.

With the license, the company illegally brought in more than 5,000 containers of waste materials between November 2015 and February 2017.

Investigations are still ongoing to identify all parties linked to the case.
