A video of a dog in northern China that has been patiently waiting almost four months for its deceased owner to return has gone viral on social media, and prompted concerns for the despairing animal’s welfare.

The dog is sitting by a guardrail in the middle of a road in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, close to the place where its female owner was killed in a car crash on August 21, the Chinese media reported.

There have been more than 1.4 million views since the video was posted on Chinese social media site Weibo. While most viewers praised the dog for its loyalty, there were also fears for its safety.

China News Agency said local dog-lovers have been leaving food, but the main worry is its proximity to vehicles. Efforts by taxi-drivers to get close to the dog have failed because it is wary of strangers.

Animal welfare volunteers are trying to contact the relatives of the deceased owner. If they are unsuccessful, the dog will be taken to a shelter and offered up for adoption.
