A 25-year-old Singaporean man was jailed for three years by the State Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to engaging in sexual activities with an underage Vietnamese girl who was only 11 years old at the time of the offences.

The accused named Li Jixian, a car dealer, met the victim in person a few days after chatting with her on the social media platform WeChat in April 2016, the Shin Min Daily News reported.

The court learned that during their first meeting at a shelter beside a playground near the girl’s home, the pair walked together, chatted, hugged and kissed each other on the lips. After that, they continued to keep in touch via WeChat.

In June 2016 the relationship became sexual at an outdoor location near the girl’s home. The accused reportedly allowed the girl to perform oral sex on him, after which and the pair proceeded to have sexual intercourse.

A month later, they met up and went to a block of flats in the girl’s neighborhood where they had sexual intercourse on a staircase landing, during which the accused did not use a condom.

It was learned that the man did not verify the age of the Vietnamese girl, who claimed to be 17 although her actual age was only 11.

In court, Li expressed remorse and said he was sorry for the shame caused to his family, especially his girlfriend who in January this year became his wife. She has reportedly forgiven him.

Li was jailed for three years after pleading guilty to two counts of sexually penetrating an underage girl.

Under Singaporean law, for each count of sexually penetrating a minor, Li could have been jailed for up to 20 years as well as fined and/or caned.
