A Hong Kong employer and two illegal Indian workers were jailed at Shatin Magistrates’ Courts on Wednesday. The local employer was sentenced to four weeks’ on a charge of being the employer of an illegal male Bangladeshi worker who was arrested in Kowloon’s Mong Kok, according to a government release.
The local employer and the illegal worker were arrested during a joint operation by the Immigration Department and police on June 20. Meanwhile, two illegal Indian workers were sentenced to 22 months and two weeks’ imprisonment separately.
Law enforcement officers raided a restaurant in Kowloon’s Tsim Sha Tsui on April 23 and found the two men working there. After checking their identities, officers found they were asylum seekers and not allowed to work in Hong Kong.
An employer suspected of hiring the illegal workers was also arrested and the investigation is ongoing.
