Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong could have their blood sugar levels and blood pressure checked for free starting on November 4 and available every Sunday in the Philippine Overseas Labour Office in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island.

Labor Attache Jalilo dela Torre, who initiated the project, said he was alarmed by the rising number of domestic workers in Hong Kong who were getting sick, hoping a regular check-up could help prevent the sickness, sunwebhk.com reported.

He said his office has been compiling statistics which show an alarming increase in the number of domestic workers in Hong Kong who are getting seriously ill or die because of such ailments.

Domestic workers can also get free advice on breast self-examination. This is the first step towards preventing breast cancer, still the most common cancer to afflict women.

The free medical check-ups are the first step towards helping domestic workers maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Members of the Filipino Nurses Association Hong Kong and the Balikatan sa Kaunlaran Hong Kong chapter will help out with the arrangements.
