Three men and one woman, all Vietnamese, were arrested by marine customs officers while trying to swim to Macau from China on Tuesday.

At 1:45 am, when customs officers were patrolling the waters off the Ocean Garden in Taipa, they found a group of five people swimming in the sea trying to get to Macau, the Jornal Cheng Pou reported.

They arrested three men and one woman, but one man managed to escape. Officers searched the area where they thought the man would come ashore and at 2:35 am found the man at the light rail station near the Ocean Garden.

The group had reportedly set off from Pak Shan Tsui in Zhuhai and had swum about 300 meters before being intercepted.

The Vietnamese were aged between 21 and 33 and were sent to the Judiciary Police for further investigation.
