A Filipino mall vendor was sentenced to six months in prison in the United Arab Emirates after he assaulted a policeman while resisting arrest for theft in Dubai Mall.
The 31-year-old was accused by a shopper of stealing a mobile phone in August. The shopper left the phone inside a washroom before informing the security guards he had lost it.
The matter was then reported to the police, according to Gulf News, who later detained the Filipino vendor. During questioning, he resisted arrest and pushed a policeman, who injured his head when he fell to the ground.
The Filipino then tried to escape the scene but was later apprehended.
The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the Filipino of assaulting the policeman while resisting arrest for stealing a mobile phone. At the weekend, the man was sentenced to six months in prison and will be deported after serving his sentence.
