An investigation has been launched after a Filipino domestic worker in Saudi Arabia who had allegedly been abused by her employer died of poisoning.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Emerita Gannaban, 44, who went to Saudi Arabia in June, died of poisoning at the Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Hospital in Riyadh on October 29, Rappler reported.

The DFA said there had been allegations that she had been maltreated and Philippine officials will investigate her death. The Philippines Embassy in Riyadh was waiting for the results of an autopsy conducted on Gannaban.

Gannaban’s remains will be repatriated after authorities finish investigating the domestic worker’s death.

“The Philippine Embassy in Riyadh is in touch with relatives of Gannaban, as well as her employer and recruiters in Manila and Riyadh, in connection with arrangements for the repatriation of her remains as soon as police authorities conclude their investigation into her death,” DFA said.
