A 29-year-old Indonesian domestic worker in Singapore was jailed for three months by a Singapore court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to stealing more than S$3,000 (US$2,181) of wedding gift cash.

The court learned that the domestic worker’s employer married in October 2017 and received a total of S$14,000 in cash as wedding gifts, which he stored in a box in a wardrobe at home in Bukit Batok, the Shin Min Daily News reported.

In mid-September this year, the man was shocked to discover more than S$3,000 of his money missing. After he found S$500 hidden under the mattress of the bed of his Indonesian domestic worker’s room, he reported the case to the police.

On October 20, the Singapore police arrested the worker, who admitted to the officers that she had been in financial difficulties, and had reached into her employer’s box five times, stealing a total of S$3,220 in cash.

The worker is yet to repay S$2,720 of the stolen money.
