A 34-year-old domestic worker was arrested by police for allegedly attacking a two-year-old girl in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong on Wednesday.

At 1pm, a 37-year-old Hong Kong woman surnamed Chu reported to the police that she suspected her domestic worker had struck her daughter with her hand in an apartment in Radiant Tower, Sing Tao Daily reported.

The girl surnamed Kwok was found with injuries to her chest and abdomen. She was sent to the Tseung Kwan O Hospital in a conscious state for medical treatment.

Police officers classed the case as ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child or young person and arrested the domestic worker. Tsueng Kwan O Police Station will follow up the case.

According to statistics from the Social Welfare Department, a total of 554 child abuse cases were recorded during the first half of this year.

Almost half, or about 247 cases related to physical abuse while 22% related to neglect.

67% of abusers are parents, 8% are family friends or friends and 1.3% are caregivers, statistics showed.
