A shipyard company in Braila, Romania, plans to employ up to 130 workers from Vietnam to cover a shortage of manpower.
Vard Braila Shipyard, the biggest employer in the city, recently hired 70 workers from Vietnam, and 60 more will soon be on their way to improve their productivity, Romania-Insider reported.
Alina Puia, the manager of the shipyard told Hotnews.ro that the firm were unable to source sufficient numbers of local workers for their needs. The difficulty in finding workers is because Romanians are enjoying better living standards and prefer to seek easier jobs that pay better, she added.
Italian group Fincatieri, owners of the shipyard, brought in the workers from a shipyard they own in Vietnam. This came after Fincatieri’s other shipyard in Tulcea, Romania, hired approximately 300 Vietnamese workers in 2017.
Romania’s decreasing population has led to increased numbers of blue-collar jobs for migrant workers. At the end of 2017, official statistics said that around 600 Vietnamese workers were employed in Romania.
