Hong Kong Police have stepped up patrols on Hong Kong Island, especially in Repulse Bay, after burglars broke into luxury villas.
The latest burglary happened in a two-story villa on 102 Repulse Bay Road on Friday when the 48-year-old female owner discovered at about 7am that a window had been prised open and the house ransacked, Oriental Daily reported.
Police investigated surveillance camera footage and found two culprits got into the garden from the hill behind the house and then broke into the villa around midnight.
Some jewelry worth around HK$120,000 (US$15,321), two mobile phones and HK$8,000 in cash were stolen. The footage showed that the two burglars fled via the hill after the burglary.
Another break-in took place on the same street on Wednesday, when valuables worth HK$80,000 were stolen.
A total of five burglaries happened in four days after October 2 in Tai Tam, Repulse Bay, The Peak and Happy Valley, where there are many luxury homes and apartments.
Officers were looking into whether the burglars were from mainland China and came to Hong Kong during the Golden Week holidays, Sing Tao Daily reported.
After checking the footage, they believed at least two crime gangs were behind the string of burglaries and had been hiding on the hillside.
Police stepped up patrols in these areas on Friday but so far no arrests have been made.
