Police are hunting for a burglar after break-ins in Repulse Bay on Hong Kong Island on Wednesday.
The two break-ins took place in a three-story villa on 31 South Bay Road in Repulse Bay. The building belongs to the family of deceased philanthropist Fong Shu-chuen, and the apartments are rented out, Headline Daily reported.
At noon, a 42-year-old domestic worker employed in one of the apartments in the villa returned home and found the house had been ransacked. She immediately called the police.
After an initial police investigation, officers found a window was forced open. The employer had lost a diamond ring worth HK$50,000 (US$6378) and a mobile phone worth HK$10,000.
Meanwhile, a 54-year-old male resident from another apartment in the villa also reported a burglary at his residence. He lost a laptop worth around HK$10,000.
After checking surveillance camera footage, officers found that a man, aged around 40, of medium build and wearing a long-sleeved top, pants and a cap, had broken into the apartments. No arrest has been made.
Since October, there have been a number of burglaries targeting luxury residences in Tai Tam, Repulse Bay, The Peak and Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island. Police have stepped up patrols in the area, but so far no suspects have been arrested.
