A 40-year-old Vietnamese man was arrested on Friday for allegedly operating an illegal dental clinic in Macau. The man, who had a work permit as a domestic helper, was extracted from his clinic in Iao Hon, Exmoo News reported.

Acting on a tip-off, police and officials from the health department raided the clinic on Friday and found the man, who was wearing a medical uniform, as well as a few dental chairs and equipment in the living room of his rented premises.

Officials believe the man had been an illegal dentist in Vietnam and came to Macau in July by applying for a work permit as a domestic helper. After being a domestic worker for five days, he quit.

He then went into a partnership with a Vietnamese woman and rented an apartment on Rua Um do Bairro Iao Hon which housed the illegal clinic and their residence.

They ordered equipment and medicine from Vietnam and asked their relatives to ship the materials to Macau. The clinic had been in operation for three months and had at least 30 patients, mainly Vietnamese.

Monthly revenue from the clinic was about 20,000 Macau patacas (US$2,475). The man did not have any professional qualifications for dentistry in Macau or Vietnam.
