A 55-year-old Filipina domestic worker who was hit by a private car in Tai Po, the New Territories on Sunday night was pronounced dead after hospital staff tried for eight hours to save her.

The victim has been named by friends on Facebook as Tess Hernandez, from Mindoro island, sunwehhk.com reported.

At 11pm on Sunday, a private car driven by a 38-year-old man was travelling along Ting Kok Road when it struck and knocked down the domestic worker as she was crossing the road, according to a police statement.

The domestic worker suffered multiple injuries and was unconscious when she was rushed to Prince of Wales Hospital, where she died on Monday morning.

It was understood that the car was a white Honda with a “P” plate, which means that the driver was possibly on a provisional license, Oriental Daily reported.

The woman was reportedly crossing the road when the car hit her, sending her flying.  The car later collided with a safety island and a traffic light.

The driver who suffered minor injuries passed a breath test. An investigation by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, New Territories North is underway.

The domestic worker, who has been working in Hong Kong for many years, reportedly had met with friends in Tai Po on Sunday.

Welfare Attache Virsie Tamayao said the Philippine Consulate General has already informed the deceased’s family of the tragedy, hongkongnews.com.hk reported.
