Police are hunting for a burglar who broke in a luxury villa and fled with HK$100,000 (US$12,753) in cash and valuables in Sha Tin in the New Territories on Saturday.

At 8am, a 94-year-old resident of the villa at 83 Ma Ling Path in Kau To Shan and his 42-year-old domestic worker discovered that two bedrooms had been ransacked, Sing Tao Daily reported.

Two watches worth HK$40,000, some gold jewelry worth HK$20,000 and HK$48,000 in cash were taken. The owner informed his daughter-in-law, who called the police.

After an initial investigation, police said the break-in took place late at night and the burglar broke in from the hillside area next to the villa.

Meanwhile, a security guard saw two burglars trying to climb into an upscale villa block on Razor Hill Road in Clear Water Bay at 2am, Oriental Daily reported.

They called police but when officers arrived, the burglars had fled. Officers searched the hillside area and no valuables were reported lost.

There were about 10 burglaries targeting low-density luxury villas, particularly those located near hillsides, in the past month.
