A British salesman has been accused of selling a watch stolen from an apartment in Palm Jumeirah in Dubai for more than 572,000 dirhams, or US$155,752.

On February 13, two masked thieves entered another British businessman’s apartment while he was out. The thieves threatened the man’s brother, a student, and Filipino domestic worker with weapons, The National reported.

The man’s brother said the thieves had a screw driver and knife and both spoke with British accents. The domestic worker said she was in the bathroom when a masked man opened the door and pulled her by the hair.

The brother and domestic worker then stayed in the bedroom until they realized the thieves had left.

“I immediately called my brother who owns the apartment. When he arrived, he checked his bedroom on the second floor and found his 13 valuable watches had been stolen,” the brother said.

The man said the watches were worth a total of four million dirhams. The thieves were still at large but police were able to track down one of the watches in the possession of a Jordanian businessman, who said that he had bought it from a British man for 572,000 dirhams on May 8.

Police arrested the British man in September. The man said he had been away in the UK on May 8, but that was found to be false. At the Dubai Criminal Court, the man denied a charge of possessing stolen items.

The next hearing will be on November 14.
