A 38-year-old woman was rescued after she allegedly attempted to kill herself by jumping from a shopping mall in Sha Tin in the New Territories late on Wednesday afternoon.

At about 5pm, the woman was seen sitting on a ledge on the seventh floor of New Town Plaza, saying she would jump and kill herself, Headline Daily reported.

Her husband, a 45-year-old local man, and security guards at the shopping mall immediately called police. Witnesses said the woman suddenly climbed over the railing and had her legs dangling over the ledge. She looked down at the crowds on the lower floors.

Police arrived with firemen and a police negotiator. A jump cushion was set up in the center of the main plaza.

After two hours of negotiations, the woman agreed to move to safety. She suffered slight injuries to her fingers and was sent to hospital for treatment.

Media reports did not give the reason why she was so distressed, and no suicide note was found at the scene. Police ruled out any foul play.
