An employment agency which “offered to sell” foreign domestic workers on the online marketplace Carousell has been identified by the Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower. SRC Recruitment has now had its business licence suspended due to the marketing strategy.
On the online Carousell page, details, including photos, of Indonesian domestic workers were posted as available, with some marked as “new” and others labeled as “sold”.
It was found that the employment agency, which has an office in Orchard Road’s Far East Shopping Centre, was behind the online advertisements that objectified workers as objects for sale, the Lianhe Zaobao (Singapore) reported, citing a report made by the Ministry of Manpower on September 19.
Following investigations by the ministry for infringements under the Employment Agencies Act, the agency has had its licence suspended and is barred from placing any new foreign domestic workers into jobs.
The Indonesian Embassy in Singapore has been informed of the incident and shall be kept informed of progress in the investigation by the Singapore authorities.
