Police arrested a man who was found carrying an axe in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The 39-year-old suspect surnamed Chan, said to be a renovation worker, was spotted by pedestrians at 2am on Yee Wo Street, Sing Tao Daily reported.

Police received reports that a man was holding an axe with no cover on the blade.

Police officers rushed to the scene and found the suspect still holding the axe. When they ordered him to drop it, he offered no resistance and dropped it to the ground.

The suspect told the officers that he planned to return the axe to his workplace, but was unable to explain where he got it, and why he hadn’t covered it up while carrying it in a public area, Oriental Daily reported.

After an initial investigation, police arrested the man for allegedly being in possession of an offensive weapon and detained him for questioning.

They will investigate the matter further, including running checks to see if the accused was under the influence of drugs or otherwise mentally impaired.
