A Filipina domestic worker was jailed for 21 months after pleading guilty to charges of burglary and breaching the conditions of stay at the District Court in Hong Kong last Wednesday.
Rachel Rosimo, a 35-year-old mother of two, stole HK$180,000 (US$22,931) from Sante Barley (Hong Kong) Ltd’s offices on the 10th floor of the Lansing Building on Queen’s Road in Central on Hong Kong Island where she had worked part-time in February this year, the sunwebhk.com reported.
She was also found guilty of breaching her conditions of stay as a domestic worker as she was not allowed to take up any full-time or part-time jobs.
The court heard that on the morning of Feb. 3, Rosimo called up staff at Sante Barley and said the office had been broken into. Staff rushed to the office and found HK$180,000 in cash missing.
Police examined the building’s surveillance footage and saw Rosimo, dressed in black and wearing a mask, enter Lansing House at 7:47am and leave at 7:56 am. They arrested her outside the office and she admitted stealing the money.
During the police interview, Rosimo told them she was instructed by a Filipino couple named Jessica and David to open the office door and tell them where the money was. She claimed she did as told and the couple entered and took the money.
She said Jessica and David promised to pay back her loan and give her an additional HK$10,000. The prosecution said there was no trace of Jessica and David.
Instead, they recovered HK$15,990 in Rosimo’s room in Wan Chai, but the rest was still missing.
