A female weightlifter on Tuesday won the Philippines’ first gold medal of the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia. On the third day of the Games at the Jakarta International Expo Hall, Hidilyn Diaz, 27, competed in the women’s 53-kilogram category in the weightlifting competition and lifted a total of 207kg to win first place, Rappler reported.
Diaz had previously won a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Kristina Shermetova from Turkmenistan took home the silver medal after finishing with 206kg while Surodchana Khambao placed third and finished with 201kg.
Diaz, who is the first Filipino woman to win an Olympic medal, will receive a total of 6 million Philippine pesos (US$112,325) for her win in Jakarta.
She will receive 2 million pesos from the Philippine government in accordance to Republic Act 10699, or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.
She will also receive 2 million pesos from the Philippine Olympic Committee, and 1 million pesos each from the Siklab Foundation and Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Lee Hiong Wee.
