The US Treasury Department announced new sanctions against Russia on Tuesday, adding to a growing list of penalties placed on Moscow and throwing another monkey wrench in President Donald Trump’s efforts to improve bilateral ties.
The latest round of sanctions will target companies and individuals suspected of trying to circumvent sanctions that had been placed on Russia for alleged cyber attacks, as well as entities suspected of violating North Korea sanctions, per Fox News.
Since the start of last year, more than 200 Russian business people, officials, as well as private and state-run companies, have been subjected to sanctions.
Trump, who has consistently expressed a desire to improve ties between the US and Russia, said in an interview with Reuters that he would consider lifting sanctions “if they do something good for us.”
“I’m not considering it at all. No. I would consider it if they do something that would be good for us. But I wouldn’t consider it without that,” Trump said in the interview.
“We have a lot of things we can do good for each other. You have Syria. You have Ukraine. You have many other things,” he added.
