A 17-year-old girl who had just been admitted to the University of Hong Kong (HKU) fell to her death from a building in Mei Foo in the New Territories before the university’s orientation.
At 2am, a security guard called the police after hearing a loud sound and finding a girl lying on the ground at Phase Three in Mei Foo Sun Chuen in Mei Foo, Apple Daily reported.
Paramedics sent the girl to Princess Margaret Hospital but she was pronounced dead when they got there.
Police believed she fell from a bathroom window of her mother’s apartment.
No suicide note was found but it was understood that the teenager had told her mother on Sunday that she felt pressured by her studies and by the stress of choosing majors for the university, Sing Tao Daily reported.
She had obtained good results on the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) exam and had received an offer from HKU and planned to join the orientation on Monday.
It is understood that the girl was born in a single-parent family and lived with her mother.
