Protesters in Indonesia have urged the government to release a teenage girl who was jailed for having an abortion after she was repeatedly raped by her brother.

The 15-year-old girl was repeatedly raped by her older brother starting in September last year and had an abortion six months after getting pregnant. In July, the girl was sentenced to six months in prison for having an abortion, while her brother was given a two-year jail term for rape, India.com reported.

Seven Indonesian non-profit organizations have started a campaign to get the girl released from prison. They also demanded the court consider the age of the girl and the fact that she was a rape survivor when she decided to have the abortion.

The organizations filed a complaint about the verdict with the Judicial Commission of Indonesia, which agreed to investigate to see if there were irregularities in the trial.

Ferena Debieva, a member of the Indonesian Family Planning Association, said the girl should be viewed as a victim and her abortion was a medical emergency.

“Our main concern is that the girl should not be detained and the abortion that she had should not be counted as a criminal offense,” Debineva said.
