A 29-year-old local man was jailed for eight months after pleading guilty in the Eastern Magistrates’ Court on Friday to five counts of stealing on Repulse Bay beach on Hong Kong Island.

His victims included tourists from the Philippines and the Netherlands.

Lo Kam-fuk, a construction worker, admitted stealing items from tourists and two local people between July 21 and 31, the reported.

A group of tourists went swimming at Repulse Bay Beach on July 21. When they came ashore after their swim, they found their backpack, which held cameras, passports, credit cards, an iPhone and HK$700 (US$89), was gone. They called police.

Three days later, two Filipinos lost handbags containing wallets, bank cards, a watch, a pair of earrings, a ring, HK$500 in cash and a mobile phone at the same beach.

Three more thefts happened at the beach in late July. In one case, two tourists from the Netherland lost their belongings on July 31. The man was arrested on the beach when a police officer staking out the area spotted him.

The court was not told if any of the missing items had been recovered.
