A 26-year-old Indonesian tourist has gone missing in Phuket in southern Thailand after he went for a swim at Karon Beach with his Ukrainian girlfriend on Sunday.

In the afternoon, Andryono Tanuwijaya and his 23-year-old girlfriend Inna Lutsyk were swimming and surfing at the beach, The Phuket News reported. But lifeguards at the beach soon noticed that the couple was having trouble in the water and jumped in to retrieve them.

Lutsyk was rescued and sent to Patong Hospital after receiving first aid at the beach. However, Tanuwijaya was pulled back by waves and could not be found. At about 7:30pm lifeguards called the police.

The Indonesian Embassy in Thailand has been informed of the situation.

The couple arrived in Thailand on August 23 and were scheduled to leave on Wednesday. The search for the Indonesian man is still ongoing.

Karon Beach is the second longest beach in Phuket, following Mai Khao. It is one of the most popular beaches in the province and is famous for its white sand and dining facilities.

[Update] At 10am on Tuesday, the Indonesian man’s body had washed up on the beach, TheTaiger.com reported.
