An Indonesian man was found guilty of sexual assault and jailed for eight months by a Malaysian court on Wednesday for kissing a 9-year-old girl in a toilet in Malaysia in June.
On June 19, Zulham Syahputra kissed a girl on her forehead and lips with sexual intention in the toilet at a restaurant in Glenmarie, Shah Alam, Selangor, the New Straits Times reported.
The girl ran away from him and told her mother and stepfather what had happened. Her stepfather called the police, who arrested Syahputra the following day.
Syahputra was charged with committing physical sexual assault on the girl. He had previously pleaded guilty at the Special Court for Sexual Crimes against Children and appealed to the court for a lighter sentence, saying he was the breadwinner of his family.
Deputy public prosecutor Nordalina Ali asked the court to hand down a fair sentence as the accused should learn a lesson. Syahputra was given an eight-month jail term.
In Malaysia, a person found guilty of sexual offences against children can face imprisonment of up to 20 years and be caned.
