A Filipina domestic worker was paid HK$5,000 (US$636) by her former employer as severance pay after negotiations at the Labour Tribunal on August 8.
Marichu Soriano had sought severance pay of HK$8,000 from former employer Chow Chu-kuem, who sacked her on June 24 after more than three years employment, sunwebhk.com reported.
The employer said she no longer needed the maid’s services.
The domestic worker received a month’s wage in lieu of notice, money for an air ticket, plus a travel and food allowance from Chow. She requested the severance pay because that was part of her work conditions in the event of her being made redundant.
At the tribunal, Chow told the presiding officer Eric Tam the domestic worker had become lazy, which meant she needed to do some of the housework despite her paying the worker. Plus, the maid could not speak Cantonese despite working for her for more than three years.
Chow initially insisted she would only to pay compensation of HK$3,000, instead of the $8,000 requested by the domestic worker.
The two finally settled on HK$5,000, as suggested by Tam.

Not the comments i expected..
Has the employer being lazy anything to do with the services of the maid being terminated? Or affect the performances of the maid?
is there not a possibility of the maid taking advantage as years and familiarity goes on that she became lazy?
I stayed in quite a big place when I was in Qatar but I was alone so frankly, it’s not that difficult to maintain but I had a Sri Lankan maid.
When she started, she cleaned the house everyday and does the laundry every 2 days (3 times a week).
After a couple of months, she started cleaning my room every other day. I didn’t say a word although I’m not not happy about about that. Laundry turned to twice a week.
Then my room gets cleaned less frewuently until I had to open my mouth to ask why mycroom wasn’t cleaned which she replied sorry andcthe next morning, she cleaned it. and every week i have ti "remind" her to clean my room.
Laundry also became once a week until at times, i had to do my own laundry or else i will not have working clothes the next day.
I even tested her by putting an objrct on the floor of one of the other rooms. A month later, the object was still there which means she didn’t clean that room.
And from doing her chores daily in the first couple of months, it became that she couldn’t work for a week in a month because she’s having her period.
Finally patience ran out, so I called the agent to take her back. And I used the services of those part-timers.
Am I as an employer in the wrong?
