A Filipina domestic worker in Hong Kong was left with a large debt to a finance company after her friend ran off.

The domestic worker named Christine, 42, who has worked for her employer in Kennedy Town for 10 years, took out a HK$38,000 (US$4,841) loan from a company to help a friend, reported.

Christine gave the money to her friend and expected her to pay her back. However, Christine became unable to contact the friend, leaving her to deal with the debt.

Christine’s employers found out about her unpaid debt when the finance company called their landline looking for Christine. The employers asked Christine to explain what had happened and how the finance company knew their contact details.

The domestic worker admitted that she had given her employers’ landline number and address when she took out the loan to help her friend, but had no idea that her friend would run away with the money.

The employer decided to pay off Christine’s debt to the finance company, but will take deduct the money from her salary until her debt to them is paid. Christine is reportedly thankful to her employers as she feared she would be fired for what she had done.
