The Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi has warned Filipino workers’ groups against conducting illegal charity drives in the UAE.
The Philippine Embassy released a statement saying that individuals and groups planning to hold fundraising activities or events should seek written approval from the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD), The Filipino Times reported.
“Individuals and organizations planning to collect donations or carry out a fund-raising event for a good cause are advised to approach a registered charity authorized by the IACAD and secure written approval from the IACAD,” the embassy said.
Under Decree No. 9 of 2015 issued by Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, it is prohibited to collect donations or advertise fundraising campaigns through all forms of media without the approval of IACAD.
Violators of the decree may face a jail term of two months to one year and will be fined 5,000 to 10,000 dirhams (US$1,361 to US$2,713).
