A taxi driver was arrested for stealing a bag containing PHP60,000 (US$1,125) which belonged to his passenger, a returning Filipino migrant worker.

On July 16, Catalina Prado, who works as a laser technician in Oman, arrived back home in the Philippines. At the taxi stand at Ninoy Aquino International Airport she got into a taxi and asked taxi driver Rodel Ormillo to take her to Muntinlupa City, Manila Standard reported.

When Ormillo told Prado that he charged a flat rate of PHP1,700 (US$32) to go to Muntinlupa City, Prado decided to transfer to a taxi whose driver would use his meter.

Prado got out of the taxi and the driver unloaded her luggage. However, as the driver sped off, she noticed that one of her bags, a black backpack that contained PHP60,000 (US$1,122) and other belongings, was missing.

Prado reported the incident to the Airport Police Department.

By using her taxi dispatch slip the police were able to identify the taxi and its driver, whom they soon arrested. The driver now faces charges for robbery at Pasay City’s Prosecutor’s office
