Ikea confirmed it was investigating after several photos and a video surfaced on social media showing at least four young people staying late at night in the furniture store in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island.
According to online discussion forum LIHKG.com, some photos and a video on Instagram showed three young men and a woman staying in the Ikea Causeway Bay branch after business hours.
One photo showed a young man sleeping on a bed with a message saying “sleep at Ikea store till 3am and don’t want to leave.” Another photo showed the store, without any customers, and the comment: “It’s very cold at Ikea at night.” Another photo showed three men holding products.
The group shared the photos and video on Instagram in early July, telling friends they stayed in Ikea after business hours. However, people online reported the incident to police. Hong Kong Ikea confirmed the incident and said an internal investigation was ongoing, news website HK01.com reported.
The furniture company spokesman said he did not know how the intruders hid in the store and he was not aware of any losses, adding that the company would strengthen security. Police are looking into the matter.
