A 64-year-old man was arrested on Sunday afternoon after allegedly hitting a 54-year-old Filipina with a hammer near Ang Mo Kio MRT station, Singapore.

The incident took place at 4:20pm on July 22, when the victim, who works as a domestic helper in Singapore, was picnicking with several friends on a lawn outside Ang Mo Kio MRT station, Lianhe Wanbao (Singapore) reported.

The suspect, a Singaporean of Malay origin, appeared drunk and, as he walked past the group, took a hammer from his bag and, in an unprovoked attack, used it to strike the victim on the head twice.

The maid, who remained conscious, was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for treatment to head injuries, while the suspect fled to a coffee shop on Ang Mo Kio Avenue. Witnesses said he appeared to be extremely drunk, and continued to consume alcohol.

At around 5pm, police officers arrested the man, who was seen yelling and shouting.

The accused will be charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. If convicted, he could face a jail term of up to seven years.
