Police are hunting for a South Asian man who allegedly passed himself off as a police officer to rob a female tourist in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island on Sunday.

At 3am, when the 38-year-old Indonesian visitor walked past Exit D of Wan Chai MTR Station on Lei Tung Street, the suspect approached her, blocked her path and claimed to be a police officer, Apple Daily reported.

The suspect told the woman that he needed to check her identification documents and belongings.

The woman passed her bag to the suspect who then stole S$70 (US$51) in cash from inside the bag before running away.

The woman ran after the suspect but failed to catch him. She reported the case to the police. When officers arrived at the scene, they searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

Police are now looking for a South Asian man aged around 45, who at the time of the robbery was wearing a grey top and black pants.
