A teenage boy in India was stunned to find a young cobra in his bag after walking a kilometer from his home to school. On Monday morning, the boy, a Class 9 student in a government school in Kamarajanagar, a town in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu state, walked to school as usual, The Times of India reported.

He looked into his bag and was about to take out some books but was shocked when he found a snake inside. He immediately threw the bag down, and the young cobra slithered out of it.

A school official said the boy was lucky that he did not put his hand into the bag before looking inside it.

A video showing a cobra slithering out of the bag has gone viral on social media.

It is believed that the snake entered the bag at the boy’s home during the weekend, as the boy said he had not opened his schoolbag since he had gone home from school on Friday evening.

Cobras are venomous snakes that prey on small animals such as lizards, frogs, birds, rats and other snakes. About 46,000 people die of snakebite in India every year, according to the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
