Two men in Indonesia’s Aceh province were publicly caned 86 times for having gay sex on Friday. The men were found guilty of having gay sex and were sentenced to four months in jail and a flogging.
After serving their sentence, they were caned 86 times, Israel National News reported. The men were initially sentenced to 90 strokes of the cane, but that was reduced to 86 after they served their sentence.
Thirteen others were also publicly caned for different offenses. Nine were guilty of showing affection in public outside marriage, one woman was convicted of selling alcohol and three men were caned for drinking alcohol, the Jakarta Globe reported.
About 300 to 400 people watched the canings. Aceh is the only province in Indonesia to follow Sharia Law and to impose public caning for crimes such as theft, gambling and adultery. In 2014, the province outlawed homosexuality.
