Fourteen students from various schools in the Philippines won five gold, two silver and seven bronze medals in a three-day mathematics competition in Bulgaria that ended on Monday.

The students represented the Philippines in the fifth Mathematics Without Borders Tournament and competed against mort than a thousand other students from 15 countries, GMA News reported.

According to the Asian MathSci League Inc (AMSLI), this was the first time the Philippines had participated in the competition.

“This is an impressive feat for the Philippine team, a neophyte in this competition,” AMSLI said.

Three students from the Philippine team were awarded Tournament Cups for their performance in the competition. Two of them, Harry Gerard Perez and Alexander Peter Benedict Lomibao, received the Golden Cup and Hans Domonic Gamboa received the Silver Cup.

Lomibao also received a plaque for being the Math Star of the Tournament for having a score of 29 out of 30 in the final round of the competition, making him the country’s most successful contestant.
