A Filipino maid is being held in a Hong Kong jail to await trial after being accused of stealing a diamond ring from her employer.

Judibeth Yarcia was accused of stealing the ring some time between February and May, sunwebhk.com reported.

The prosecutor said the case was serious and since the defendant had no local ties, he would object to granting bail.

Magistrate Peter Law at the Eastern Magistrates’ Court agreed, but told the defendant she could apply for bail at the Court of First Instance.

Law adjourned the case to August 7 for plea-taking. Meanwhile, Yarcia was ordered to return to jail to wait for the next hearing.

According to the Hong Kong Theft Ordinance, anyone who commits theft shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for 10 years.
