A female police officer was shot dead by assailants on a motorcycle in Tabuelan, Cebu City, as she drove from her home to a public market. She was the seventh active officer killed in the Philippines in 11 months.

Police said that Avita Sarzuelo was gunned down at 5am Thursday in Barangay Poblacion by three unidentified men only 50 meters from her home. Witnesses said that two of the men were armed with an automatic rifle and a pistol, the Sun Star reported.

No motive has been established for the attack, but Tabuelan Police Chief Emmanuel Rabaya said there had been reports that Sarzuelo was involved in the illegal drugs trade. She was assigned to the Cebu Provincial Police Office.

Sarzuelo was the third active non-commissioned police officer to be killed by unknown gunmen in the past month.
