The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has said it will investigate after a video clip surfaced on social media showing a worker, thought to be a Department contractor, dumping a bag of trash into the sea.

A 17-second video clip went viral on social media on Monday. It showed a middle-aged man, who was smoking and wearing a safety vest, picking up a bag of trash and dumping it into the sea in Wong Chuk Hang on Hong Kong Island, news website HK01.com reported.

The person who uploaded the video clip said he captured the scene at 8:30am, and that it was the second bag of trash he saw the man throw into the sea.

Along with the clip, the poster left a sarcastic message: “this is how the FEHD handles the trash – no wonder the harbour becomes smelly”.

Other netizens expressed anger at the worker’s actions.

A spokesperson from the FEHD said the act seen in the clip was a very serious offence.

The department claims that it will consider penalizing the offender and it may issue a default notice to the contractor, asking for the dismissal of the worker if sufficient evidence is gathered.
