A Singaporean woman was jailed on Monday for six weeks for abusing her Indonesian maid three times in less than a month for “minor mistakes”.
Karen Ching Pei Yi, 58, and her husband hired Indonesian domestic worker Heni Solekhah on January 15, 2016. According to a court in the city-state, Solekhah was forced to sleep on a mattress on the balcony of the family home and not allowed to own a phone, The Straits Times reported.
Ching started physically abusing Solekhah in June 2016. The first incident happened on June 12 when Ching kicked the domestic worker’s buttocks. The report did not reveal the reason for the assault.
On June 25, 2016, Ching scolded Solekhah for cooking some packets of instant noodles (which had been cooked at the request of family members) and pulled the maid’s hair. Ching also bruised the domestic worker’s chin.
Two days later, Ching scolded Sokekhah again for washing all the bedsheets and changing a mattress protector. Ching got angry and assaulted the domestic worker as she had wanted them washed in batches.
Solekhah escaped from her employer’s home and went to the Ministry of Manpower to report the abuse. The police were alerted and arrested Ching.
On March 15 at the State Courts, Ching pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and one count of using criminal force on the domestic worker. On Monday, the court sentenced Ching to six weeks in jail.
Ching could have been jailed up to three years and fined up to S$7,500 (US$5,511) on each count of assaulting the domestic worker.
