A video showing a group of men using sticks and brooms to rescue a dog from the tightening coils of a large python in Thailand has gone viral on social media. The dog and snake both survived the encounter.

Filmed in a rural area in the northern province of Chiang Mai, the video shows the python slowly squeezing the life out of the black dog while the men try to pull it free and a second dog does its best to chase the snake away. Only the hind legs of the trapped dog are visible.

Eventually one of the men manages to uncoil the end of the python’s tail and it is tugged clear of the dog. The snake continues to bite the dog on the legs, but slithers back into the forest after it is beaten by the men with sticks.

According to onlookers, the dog and snake both escaped any serious injuries. Social media users praised the dog’s rescuers for not killing the python, which is a protected species in Thailand.

Local media said the group of men who rescued the dog were employees of a tour guide company.
