Tuesday’s shooting at Quarry Bay Park in Taikoo Shing on Hong Kong Island has claimed a second life, as a 62-year-old man who suffered gunshot wounds was pronounced dead in hospital on Wednesday.

The man had been in a critical condition after he and three of his brothers and sisters were shot. Police believe the incident was part of a family dispute over the inheritance of an HK$8 million (US$1.02 million) apartment, Apple Daily reported.

An 80-year-old woman who suffered a gunshot wound to the head died a few hours after the attack on Tuesday.

Another brother remains in a critical condition, while doctors noted the condition of the remaining female victim as ‘stable’.

Police are holding a 44-year-old woman, Ada Chim Sum-kit, over the shootings. She is believed to be the niece of the four victims.

Secretary for Security John Lee said on Wednesday that Hong Kong has strict gun controls, and Immigration and Customs officers are working hard to prevent the smuggling of weapons into the city, Radio Television Hong Kong reported.

Lee added that he is deeply concerned about this particular case, and has directed the police to look into how the gun used in the attack ended up in the perpetrator’s hands.

It is understood that Chim visited the Philippines earlier this year and underwent security training, Sing Tao Daily reported, adding that receipts for parcels from the Philippines were found in her apartment in Tseung Kwan O, the New Territories.

Police sources were quoted as saying that they did not rule out the possibility that the suspect bought the gun during her time in the Philippines and disassembled it before mailing the parts to Hong Kong.
