A Filipino maid in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has been jailed for attempting to take her life after she was raped by her employer’s son-in-law.

Roman Santos, the domestic worker’s husband who is now in Nueva Ecija in the Philippines, said his wife was raped twice in March by the employer’s son-in-law, ABS-CBN News reported.

Santos said his wife was abused repeatedly by her employers and tried to escape the abuse by taking her life. She cut her wrist but she was taken to a hospital by her employer.

After she recovered, the employer had her arrested as attempted suicide is a criminal offense under Sharia Law in Saudi Arabia.

Santos is pleading for help from the Philippine government to have his wife repatriated. The case has been forwarded to the Philippine Embassy in Saudi Arabia and the Department of Foreign Affairs. However, Santos said he had not been given any updates on the case.
