A 33-year-old domestic worker was arrested by police for alleged child abuse in Yuen Long, the New Territories on Monday.

At 6pm, police received a report from a local man surnamed Cheung, who lives in an apartment on Fung Kat Heung Road in Yung Long’s Pat Heung. Chiang claimed that his 4-year-old daughter’s hand was found to be red and swollen, Oriental Daily reported.

The man suspected that his domestic worker had struck his daughter.

Upon the arrival of police and paramedics personnelm the girl was taken to hospital for examination. The domestic worker was then placed under arrest. The case is being handled by the crime investigation unit of Yuen Long Police Station.

The media report did not disclose the nationality of the arrested.

According to statistics from the Social Welfare Department, a total of 236 child abuse cases were recorded in Hong Kong in the first three months of this year, 45% of which involved physical abuse.

Most child abuse victims suffer at the hands of parents, the statistics showed.
