A Filipino fisherman who attempted to kill himself was rescued by the marine police in Kaohsiung in Taiwan at night on June 20.
The 27-year-old migrant worker was spotted jumping into the water from a deep sea fishing boat near Ch’ien-chen Fishing Harbor. During heavy rain, the man refused to be rescued by marine police, but was finally persuaded to return to his boat, with the aid of a life buoy, the Taiwan Times reported.
The man was distraught after the rescue and police tried to talk to him to prevent him from jumping into the water again. The man said he wanted to commit suicide after he had a drink and quarreled with his family in the Philippines over the phone.
He later calmed down and police sent him to hospital for further treatment. He is now being taken care of by his employment agency.
The Kaohsiung Community Mental Health Center, operated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan, runs two suicide prevention hotlines – 07-3874649 and 07-3874650.
