A 28-year-old male passenger died after falling from a moving taxi and being struck by another vehicle in Tai Lam Tunnel in the New Territories in the early hours of Friday.

The man surnamed Lai was reportedly drunk when he took a taxi from Dundas Street in Kowloon’s Mong Kok to Ping Shan in Yuen Long, news website HK01.com reported.

The taxi was driving along Tsing Long Highway towards Yuen Long just after midnight when Lai suddenly needed to vomit. After he opened the taxi door, he reportedly fell from the moving vehicle, according to a government release.

A private vehicle travelling behind the taxi failed to avoid Lai.

Lai suffered serious head injuries and was rushed, unconscious, to Pok Oi Hospital, where he was shortly after pronounced dead.

An investigation by the special investigation team of traffic of New Territories North Police Headquarters is underway.
