Two Filipino students enrolled in a private school in the Al Qusais area in Dubai have committed suicide and their deaths have been linked to a bizarre internet game.

On April 24 one of the students, a 16-year-old girl, hanged herself in her bedroom. Her mother found her body and called police, The National reported.

The next day the second victim, a 15-year-old boy, jumped off the balcony of his parents’ eighth floor apartment. Police suspect the two suicides were linked to an internet-based gamed called Blue Whale Challenge, which first appeared in May 2016.

The game consists of tasks a player must accomplish within 50 days and the final challenge requires the player to commit suicide.

“We are investigating all possibilities to confirm whether the pupils had actually played the game or not. Their mobile phones will be referred to the criminal laboratory for inspection next week,” police said.
