News is breaking early Thursday morning (Damascus time) that a confrontation has broken out in the Golan Heights.
Syrian media reported late Wednesday that Israel had fired missiles at Syria, some of which were intercepted, according to Haaretz. Syria’s state news agency also reported that it had also intercepted some Israeli missiles on Tuesday night.
According to Al-Masdar news, Israel fired artillery shells toward Syrian Arab Army positions in the city of Al-Ba’ath, precipitating a back and forth of artillery fire. Al-Masdar called the outburt a “massive confrontation between Israeli and Syrian forces,” but said no casualties had been reported as of the 1:30 am (Damascus time).
A timeline of events as reported by Haaretz said that a barrage of 20 rockets was fired from Syria towards Israeli military outposts in the Golan Heights late Wednesday night. No injuries were reported and several rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.
The escalation, which Al-Masdar said is still ongoing, comes on the heels of the US decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal. Israeli intelligence assessments had predicted that Israel may face rocket fire following the Trump administration’s decision.
